There’s something cinematic about last words the audience doesn’t get to hear, but no secret stays buried forever. So it is that one of the best moments of The Office is finally turning up the volume, as Jenna Fischer reveals Pam’s last words to Michael Scott.

Way back in Season 7’s “Goodbye, Michael,” the Steve Carell character attempted a stealthy exit for his new life in Colorado, but in doing so missed out on a chance to say goodbye to Fischer’s Pam. The episode’s final minutes saw Michael removing his microphone and heading off through airport security, only to be stopped by Pam, who caught up at the last second to say goodbye. It was an especially sweet moment, made all the more poignant by the characters’ lack of microphones preventing us from hearing their tearful exchange.

No longer! Fischer addressed the question in an Instagram video (h/t Mashable), and revealed that the moment wasn’t so much about Pam’s goodbye to Michael, but more about Fischer herself saying goodbye to Steve Carell:

That was me talking to Steve. I told him all the ways I was going to miss him when he left our show. Those were real tears and a real goodbye. That was a really emotional scene.

Granted, that still doesn’t quite explain what Pam might have said to her former boss and friend, but the character already acknowledges in the episode that Michael was hopeful and excited about his new life with Holly. This is the second bit of Office history Fischer has revisited in recent years, so can a revival really be that far behind?
