The Average Child Gets Their First Smart Phone at Age 10

Kids are being introduced to technology earlier and earlier, whether we like it or not!

According to a new report, the average age a kid gets their first smartphone is about 10-years-old. Additionally, 39% of kids get a social media account at about 11. Smartphones and social media kind of go hand-in-hand, so that’s not much of a surprise.

I think back to when I got my first cell phone, which was when I was in 8th grade. Smartphones weren’t a thing back in 2004, so my phone wasn’t anything special. It was a flip-phone with a blue screen, and all I could do was play crappy games and make phone calls. It didn’t matter, though, because I felt like I was in a whole new world. A little later, my parents upgraded me to a pink RAZR, and I don’t remember a time in my life when I was more excited than that. The screen was in COLOR! The phone had a CAMERA! I could record music and set it as my RINGTONE! Can you even believe it?

When I got to high school, technology started to advance very quickly, which was a problem for teenage Courtlin, because my parents absolutely refused to pay for texting and internet. I had one of those phones with a pull-out keyboard, but it was of no use to me. When I was 17 I had a job, so I went out and bought a pay-as-you-go phone from one of those crappy little companies, and I paid $50 a month for unlimited texting and internet. I didn’t get my first iPhone until I was about 20, and I’ve had one ever since.

I really think there’s no wrong or right time to give your child a smartphone or a universal age to let them use social media. It’s 100% up to the parent on when they think their child is ready for the responsibilities that come with it. Having a smart phone is a privilege and not a right! Especially if the parent is the one paying for it…

We want to know what your phone/social media rules are at home. How old do/did your kids have to be before they got a smart phone? What are the privileges they have with their phones? Share your personal policies in the comments!
