Mary Hastings, a geometry teacher at Ozen High School, is in hot water after a video of her hitting one of her students went viral.

63-year-old Hastings has been placed on administrative leave after physically assaulting a student. A video was posted online by a classmate, showing Hastings repeatedly smacking a student, saying, "Because you’re stopping him from graduating, you idiot a**."

On Friday, Hastings was arrested for assault and was released on a $2,500 bond later that day. She has been placed on paid leave while the investigation continues.

An anonymous student says that Hastings is often the target of students, and they curse and throw things at her. She is said to usually be very patient, which is why this video came as a surprise to many. The student also told Fox News:

"You know we only see 12 seconds of [the video], that’s all it is. It’s not the whole thing.”

The school district has responded to the incident, saying:

“The District is committed to providing a safe and secure environment for our students. BISD does not condone employees abusing any child and will not tolerate such conduct.”
