Despite good intentions, many do not give thought to the treats that are given to children during Halloween. Some kids have food allergies or other conditions that may not allow them to eat certain candy and it's up to parents to sort things out after the fact. The Teal Pumpkin Project wants all trick-or-treaters to feel included on the holiday and wants to help parents stay aware of their children's needs up front.

"As parents what we're trying to do is raise these children to be aware, considerate and compassionate of others, and the reason that I find that teal pumpkin can appeal to families that don't have food allergies and dietary restrictions is that you want those children to know that they're a part of something.  It's the best way is to be a pal to a kid with a food allergy." - Becky Hodson, Mother of a son with a peanut allergy.

How does it work? Just simply put a teal pumpkin on your home doorstep. This symbolizes that you're giving a non-food treat to trick-or-treaters, such as mini slinkies pencils, and bubbles. This way all kids can enjoy Halloween! Some Hy-Vee stores have pre-made teal pumpkins. They are even having an event on October 21st to spread awareness, or you can get creative and paint your own.
