The Cedar Rapids Fire Department is urging all citizens to stay off area waterways still covered by thin layers of ice.  The recent warming trend has melted a significant layer of the ice and some area waterways are not safe.

Outdoor enthusiasts should be particularly careful near bridges, thoroughfares, culverts and wherever else there may be currents flowing underneath as ice in these areas may be very thin or non-existent.

Citizens should watch out for thin, clear or honeycombed ice.  Dark snow and dark ice are other signs of weak spots.  Parents should alert children of unsafe ice in their area, and make sure that they stay off of the ice.

While no incidents or injuries have been reported this month, the Fire Department and other City departments are proactively cautioning citizens about thin ice to prevent any tragedies.
