The newest movie in the 'Star Wars' trilogy is already on its way to being the most popular movie in box office history.

Preliminary estimates indicate last night's opening-night showings took in between $50 and $55 million. Showings started at 7 o'clock last night. The $50-55 million would shatter the $43.5 million took in by "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2" in July of 2011.

Three days ago, the movie had already sold more than $100 million worth of advance tickets, in the U.S. alone. The opening weekend record was set six months ago by "Jurassic World," which cashed in $208.4 million. I'll be absolutely shocked if the new 'Star Wars' movie doesn't obliterate the record this weekend. Admittedly, I'm not a "Star Wars" guy but never have I seen such excitement for a movie.

The international record for an opening weekend is $316.1 million. That record is also owned by "Jurassic World," for a couple more days.

Enjoy the movie and "May the force be with you."
