Every Thursday we highlight a problem from a listener. We give our advice and ask other listeners to offer advice. Welcome to the Counseling Corner.

Dear Brain and Courtlin,

I'm having a parenting issue that I'm hoping you and the listeners can give me some advice on.  I have a ten year old son. He's a great kid, and the two of us do a lot together like playing sports and video games, and watching movies. We were watching TV one night and we both saw a trailer for a movie that we thought looked really funny. He asked if I would take him to see it in the theater. I looked up the rating online, and found out the movie is rated PG-13.

I'm really torn on whether or not to take him. Some movies with this rating are OK, but others really push the envelope and are almost R rated.  I'm honestly OK with my son hearing a little inappropriate language, or some mild violence.  But there are many things, including anything sexual, that I would like to avoid.

Do other parents take their kids to movies with this rating?  Or will I get dirty looks if I walk into the theater with my 10 year old?

Thanks,

Dave

What Our Listeners Think:

Marcee pointed out that some TV shows are just as bad or worse than a PG-13 movie so it probably wouldn't be bad for Dave to take his son to the movie.

Rita suggested looking the movie up online to find out why it's rated PG-13.

Brian thinks it would be okay for Dave to take his son but he shouldn't send him to the movies by himself.

Kris said Dave should go see the movie by himself first and then decide if he thinks it's okay to take his son to see it.

Hannah recommended Dave use his judgement. Not all PG-13 movies are the same.
