In preparation for flooding conditions in Cedar Rapids, various sandbagging locations have been opened. Below is a list of current locations in the area, all of which will be open throughout the evening and overnight Saturday into Sunday, September 25:

  • Former K-Mart west location at 16th Ave. SW and Williams Blvd. SW.
  • Hawkeye Downs at 6th Street and Hawkeye Downs Road SW.
  • The Ellis Park Pavilion (reopens at 5 p.m. Saturday).

The public is encouraged to go to one of these locations if they need sandbags or would like to help with sandbagging efforts. Volunteers should bring shovels.

Also, it's important to note that these sandbagging locations are intended for residents and volunteers who are there to use the sandbags to protect homes and/or businesses. Additional traffic in the area hampers the ability of residents to get these resources. It is also making it challenging for business owners attempting to relocate the contents of their business.

The corporation of the public to help public safety personnel alleviate traffic concerns is appreciated.

Linn County will have sandbagging material available FREE OF CHARGE to Linn County residents at the Linn County Engineers Office, 1888 County Home Road, Marion.

Residents who need volunteer assistance with sandbagging efforts are asked to call United Way’s 2-1-1 or 319-739-4211.
