RACE RAISES MORE THAN $30,000 TO SUPPORT FAMILIES
Families helped by Ronald McDonald House reunite, give back at 30th annual race
IOWA CITY, Iowa – More than 750 runners and walkers helped raise more than $30,000 for Ronald McDonald House Charities of Eastern Iowa & Western Illinois by participating in the Red Shoe Half Marathon and 5K Run/Walk on May 4.
The charity’s 30th annual race brought together families who have stayed at the Ronald McDonald House of Iowa City, corporate and student groups and other supporters.
“The event is a great way for families who have stayed at the Ronald McDonald House to give back in their own way, whether it’s walking in the 5K or running the half marathon,” Development Director Carson Eggland said.
Nate Canton, 34, of North Liberty, won the half marathon with an outstanding time of 1 hour, 12 minutes, 59 seconds. Grant Jacobson, 24, of Iowa City, won the 5K run in 17 minutes, 12 seconds. On the women’s side, Collette Gnade, 23, of Iowa City, was the top finisher in the half marathon with a time of 1 hour, 30 minutes, 48 seconds. Payton Boylston, 17, of Ames, ran the fastest 5K in 18 minutes, 31 seconds.
Three members of the Burdorf Family of State Center participated in the 5K run, alongside Steph Stoll, 33, of Iowa City. Stoll donated a kidney to Blake Burdorf, after he was born with kidney failure in 2011. The Burdorf Family has stayed at the Ronald McDonald House several times.
“Staying at the Ronald McDonald House made it possible for us to be together as a family,” Blake’s father Aaron Burdorf told the crowd after the race. “It also gave a place of retreat to whoever wasn’t staying with Blake in the hospital. We’re so happy to give back to the Ronald McDonald House.”
Sunday’s race was the first leg of Iowa’s “Longest” Marathon, which will conclude Oct. 19 with the Iowa City Community School District’s Run for the Schools half marathon.
All proceeds from Sunday’s race will benefit RMHC of Eastern Iowa & Western Illinois and help make it possible for any family to stay at the House, regardless of their ability to pay for a room.
