Yesterday afternoon, Linn Mar schools were put on what is called a lockout. Some in the community were confused. Is that similar to a lockdown? Were students in any danger? Marion police have explained the difference.

Police officials say they put Linn Mar schools on lockout status at around 12:55 p.m. Monday afternoon. They were responding to a social media post. Someone had notified them of a Snapchat post that mentioned a weapon near the schools. Police enacted the lockout as a precaution. After an investigation, the lockout was lifted 26 minutes later.

Police decided on the lockout because the threat was outside of the school During a lockout, students go along with their normal classes and schedule but are not allowed to go outside the building. No one is allowed to come inside either. In a lockdown situation, students and teachers are told to lock their doors in case the threat is coming from inside the school.

The investigation into yesterday's threat continues. No charges have been filed.
