August 2nd is National Night Out, and there are plenty of events to participate in around Cedar Rapids tonight.

According to the official website, "National Night Out is an annual community-building campaign that promotes police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie to make our neighborhoods safer, better places to live." It's a way for residents to get to know each other, and also for residents to get to know local police officers. United States Attorney Kevin W. Techau released a statement saying, “the night out is also a great way to acknowledge the accomplishments of our neighborhood organizations that keep communities safe and to thank our law enforcement community for putting their lives on the line for us every day.”

It is the 33rd year for National Night Out, and organizers are expecting more than 16,000 communities to participate in tonight's activities this year. Cedar Rapids police Sgt. Cristy Hamblin says there are 19 individual events planned for tonight in Cedar Rapids, including one in Marion. Examples of some of the events include barbecues, potlucks, picnics, and even a poolside party at an apartment complex.

Iowa City will also be hosting several events tonight, with the main one happening at Wetherby Park from 5-7 p.m.
