It was a nice, relaxing Monday morning drive to Iowa City until 8:11.

I was on my way to Iowa City this morning to have some cosmetic work done to KHAK's new GMC Sierra when it happened. I saw the deer in the median, in full stride. Just ahead of me to the left was a minivan. Both of us were helpless, and so was the deer. The deer crashed into the van and then ricocheted into the front left bumper of the KHAK vehicle. The other driver and I were both ok. I wish I could say the same for the deer, which ended up in the ditch.

Yes, it's rut season in Iowa for deer. Their hormones are running a little wild. Add in that it's bow hunting season, and they're on the move. In the case of this morning, they're moving very fast.

It seems like you typically see deer along the roadway at night or early in the morning, but they can be there at any moment. There was literally nothing I could do this morning to prevent the crash. Still, it was a great reminder of just how quickly things can change behind the wheel. This morning, it was a deer. Tomorrow it could be a driver swerving into your lane. We just have to keep our eyes peeled at every moment.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I better get this thing to a body shop.
