Outdated technology and the high cost of updating the technology are two reasons given why flashing school zone signs have been deactivated in Cedar Rapids.

According to a recent report by the Gazette, it’s unclear if the signals will return in the future.

With the timed flashing lights on school zone signs having been deactivated, drivers should now heed the times listed on signs to know when school speed zones are in effect.

Cedar Rapids public safety officials remind us we should all be slowing down in these school zones, but I've noticed that few people are taking their foot off the gas in the afternoon when passing through these areas. Those flashing lights serve a purpose that maybe we shouldn't ignore.
