People of Cedar Rapids, what are we doing? I know what we're not doing. We're not exercising... at least not very many of us. The results of a new study are, in a word, embarrassing.

While the percentage of people exercising in the U.S. is trending upward, Cedar Rapids is NOT doing well. Just how bad is it? The new survey looked at 189 metropolitan markets around the country and we're #187. What?! Hey, there's room for improvement... LOTS of room.

The Gallup-Sharecare survey shows only 45.6 percent of people in Cedar Rapids exercise three or more times during a given week. That leaves us ahead of only Akron, Ohio and Hickory-Lenoir-Morgantown, North Carolina. The last one probably because they get tired just telling people where they're from.

The national average for people who work out at least three days a week is 53.4 percent, according to Time. People who live in the western part of the United States are far more likely to be active. Three of the top four most active cities are in Colorado. Boulder, Fort Collins, and Greeley all have about two-thirds of residents exercising almost every other day. It's the views, it's the weather... for us, there's no excuse.

It's time to get off our collective butts, Cedar Rapids. There's a world of adventure waiting for us out there because exercising isn't always about a treadmill or a gym. However, it certainly isn't about the sofa and that remote. Let's get up and get moving. We've got some catching up to do, and we'll feel better for it.
