Beat the heat and stay inside with a good book this weekend. Now you'll have more chances to do so.

Just in time for the Excessive Heat Warning and 100 degree-plus heat index readings to go in effect for most of the weekend, the Cedar Rapids Public Library has great news.

The downtown library will be changing their hours this weekend. It will be open again, from 1-5 p.m. on Sundays starting this Sunday, July 1. Hours remain unchanged the rest of the week: Monday-Thursday 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., Friday and Saturday 9-5.

Ladd Library's hours are making a slight change, too, opening Monday-Thursday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. That's an hour earlier than they previously opened. This branch at 3750 WIlliams Blvd. SW is closed Saturday and open 1-5 p.m. Sunday.

The money to expand library hours was located and able to be reallocated from previously existing funds earlier this year, after a 2016 tax levy was voted down in Cedar Rapids.

Call me a nerd, but I'm excited. Will this get you and your family to the library more often this summer?
