Each year about this time, I spend nearly 100-dollars on a big safety measure. It's worth every penny.

The weather lately certainly doesn't lend itself to thinking about running your furnace, but sure enough that time is coming. Usually, a cold snap reminds me to get a fall cleanup done on our furnace. We haven't really had one this year, but for whatever reason I thought of it a couple weeks ago when I was on vacation. So, this morning, it was time for our furnace to get the once-over from a Cedar Rapids heating and cooling company. The report was a good one. I was told that everything looked good and that the heat exchanger has held up well, but that furnace is going into its 20th winter, so... Yeah, I know a new furnace in the next few years is a given.

The total cost of my cleaning & checkup this morning was $90. Keeping my wife, me and our pets warm and perhaps even more importantly safe from a possible carbon monoxide leak is worth every cent.

If you haven't scheduled an annual look under your furnace's hood yet, make that call now. You don't want to start your furnace without knowing if it's safe and ready to tackle another Iowa winter. The lowest high temperature in the next 10 days is 71 degrees, so you should have a little time before you'll need to run that furnace. However, I can't promise what day 11 will bring, or that the forecast won't change. It is Iowa after all.
