The road to the UNI Dome in Cedar Falls got a little closer for some teams as the second round of the high school football playoffs got underway across Iowa last night. Several metro area teams are a step closer to heading to Cedar Falls.

In a battle of 4A metro teams, #4 Cedar Rapids Washington beat Cedar Rapids Jefferson 42-21. Jefferson had their first winning season since 2001 and their first playoff win since 1992. Washington, last year's runner-up in class 4A, advances to the quarterfinals to take on Cedar Rapids Kennedy. The #3 ranked Cougars beat North Scott for the second time this year 49-7. Despite a 3-7 record just one year ago, the Cougars improve to 11-0 this season.

In class 3A, Cedar Rapids Xavier were victims of an upset, losing to Decorah 30-21. The #2 ranked Saints were the second ranked team that Decorah dispatched of after beating #5 Independence in round one. The Vikings move on to take on #3 ranked and undefeated West Delaware in the quarterfinals.
