Meet The Two Final Candidates For Cedar Rapids Mayor

Cedar Rapids voters went to the polls Tuesday night to vote for a very large number of candidates to become the city’s new mayor. There were a total of eight on the ballot, but only two will be on the ballot on December 5 when voters will head back to the polls.

It had been a quarter-century since there were so many candidates for Mayor in Cedar Rapids. The eight on the ballot were Kris Gulick, Brad Hart, Gary Hinzman, Scott Olson, Tim Pridgeon, Jorel Robinson, Lemi Tilahun, and Monica Vernon. The remaining two candidates are Monica Vernon and Brad Hart.

Monica Vernon was Tuesday’s top vote-getter in the city. Vernon, who spent six years (2010-2016) as City Council Mayor Pro Tem, received 5,352 votes, or just over 30 percent of the total, according to the Gazette.

Vernon spent eight years on the City Council, from 2008 to 2016. She left the local political scene two years ago to run for Congress. You can learn more about Monica Vernon HERE.

Brad Hart got the second most votes in Cedar Rapids on Tuesday. Hart, a lawyer with the Bradley & Riley firm in Cedar Rapids, received 3,593 votes, accounting for more than 20 percent of the city total.

Hart has lived in Cedar Rapids the last 27 years and has served as chairman of the board for the Cedar Rapids Chamber of Commerce and other area organizations. He’s a past winner of the Cedar Rapids Five Seasons Citizenship Award and over the last five years he’s helped raise more than $30 million for community projects. Both candidates view the local economy, job creation, getting permanent flood protection done, and street repairs done as the most important things they would seek to get done as Cedar Rapids Mayor.

The runoff election will be held in Cedar Rapids Tuesday, December 5. Please put a reminder in your phone, or on your calendar, to cast your ballot that day. It’ll be the last time you vote this year… I promise.
