The man who ambushed and killed officers from the Urbandale and Des Moines Police Department's last November will spend the rest of his life in jail.

Scott Michael Greene of Urbandale pleaded guilty this morning to the murders of Urbandale officer Justin Martin and Des Moines officer Anthony Beminio. Both were ambushed in their squad cars in the early morning hours of November 2, 2016. Greene had previously pleaded not guilty to the killings of the two officers, who were mourned across the state of Iowa.

According to the Des Moines Register, Greene admitted to the killings in court this morning. These are his words:

I took a rifle and I shot an Urbandale police officer. (Then) I was driving down Merle Hay Road, I turned right next to the officer (Beminio) and I took the same rifle and I killed him."

Polk County Attorney John Sarcone spoke of what may have led to the shootings.

Sarcone asked for consecutive life sentences and told the court the two officers, "laid down their lives for their communities and we have to recognize that." He also said the two, "suffered multiple, multiple injuries."

Greene did receive the consecutive life sentences this morning. He was also ordered to pay a combined $300,000 in restitution to the families of the officers he killed.
