Josh Abbott's father died Thursday night (March 2) after recently suffering a stroke. The Texas country star shared the news with fans via Instagram on Friday evening (March 3).

"It is with a deep sense of sadness I post this. Last night my father went to be with the Lord," the Josh Abbott Band frontman writes. "I know he's in a better place but I will truly miss him so much. I will miss our talks, our hunts, and our hugs. Our little family is crushed right now. Please pray for my mother's peace of mind and strength to endure this. Thank you all for the thoughts, posts, and prayers over the last 3 weeks."

Abbott's dad suffered a stroke on Feb. 9, but did not recognize the effects until two days later.

“Tell your family you love them. You just never know what can happen and then it might be too late,” Abbott wrote on Instagram on Feb. 17.

Country Stars Who Have Suffered Tragedy

On Tuesday (Feb. 28), Abbott revealed that JAB were canceling some tour dates so he could be with his father and family.

“Due to my father’s debilitating condition due to a stroke almost 3 weeks ago, we will not be touring this week or next week (March 1-12),” Abbott wrote on the band’s Facebook page. “Unless a miracle occurs, we fear this will be his last week here with us. Therefore, I need to be by his side, holding my mother’s hand through it. I know you all understand, and we truly appreciate the prayers and kind comments you have all left.”

JAB have had a rough road in the last year. They canceled several concerts last summer after a series of “heavy emotional blows” that included the death of a grandfather, the discovery of a dead body in Las Vegas and Abbott suffering an extreme case of anaphylaxis.

The next tour date listed on Josh Abbott Band's official website is for March 15 in Seattle, Wash.
