Jon Pardi’s California is not full of palm trees and movie stars. The country singer paints a picture of his home state that shows why he’s becoming one of the most exciting, traditional country newcomers to emerge in years.

During this exclusive Taste of Country video premiere, Pardi’s mother talks about how he started singing before the “Head Over Boots” singer describes the slow evolution of his live show and country career. It all began in Dixon, Calif., a midsize town in central California.

“My California sunrise, there’s a real mist in the air,” Pardi says. “I think of the mountains. You can smell the farm fields. You can smell the dirt and the lights and the whole sun.” Of course, California Sunrise is the name of his second studio album, ready for release on June 17. The 11-track project features his current Top 20 hit “Head Over Boots,” as well as the title track, which is available on Spotify.

Family footage of a young, blond Pardi strumming guitar and singing in his backyard is mixed with footage of his live show, fans and thoughts from the 31-year-old. Pardi’s mother talks about how her mother was instrumental in her son’s career. It was her love of country music, and her karaoke machine that helped nurture his talent.

“She loved country music, so that’s honestly where he got his start,” she says.

Previous Pardi singles include “Missin’ You Crazy,” “What I Can’t Put Down” and the Gold certified “Up All Night.” Pardi’s debut album Write You a Song made ToC’s list of the 10 Best Albums of 2014.
