Months have passed, but it's nearly decision time on traffic cameras in Cedar Rapids and other locations around the state. My opinion doesn't count, but I'm going to share it anyway.

I'll put it out there right away... I'm in favor of the I-380 cameras. I know many people say they believe the speed cameras are placed too close to the interstate's change to 55 miles per hour. I don't buy that argument. Knowing that the city is giving you some leeway on speed before a citation is issued, that argument just doesn't hold water. Anyone that's still going that fast... I'm sorry, but they deserve a ticket.

Some people say they don't think a mounted camera should be able to be used. That doesn't make sense to me either. They get hit by a speed gun, or an airplane, it's ok? Somehow I'm guessing the answer is no.

The only argument that makes sense to me is the one that there's no way to know who's driving the vehicle. That I understand. Then again, if someone is driving your car and they're driving it over the speed limit they better either be a relative or very good at apologizing.

The Iowa Department of Transportation's Director Paul Trombino is keeping information on the decision very secretive, but at the very least I hope a compromise is on the way. I genuinely believe the cameras on I-380 have made traveling the busy interstate a safer venture. Sure, there's still some people flying along that hit the brakes as they approach the cameras. However, I believe the vast majority of people are driving slower than they used to and the number of close calls I've had has gone way down. I probably should find some wood to knock on about now...
