The state Senate on Tuesday ruled to let schools decide when they want to start fall classes. The ruling would eliminate the law the bars public and private schools from starting school before the week which September 1st falls, unless they get a state waiver. All but 2 districts in the state asked and received those waivers last year. The bill would put control back with the schools, and would let them set their calendars with best interest of the students in mind. It would also end the waiver process. However, a battle with Governor Terry Branstad is looming.

The Governor doesn't want schools to be able to start before August 23rd. One reason Branstad and others are against early starts, is complaints from the tourism industry. They claim millions of dollars a year are lost because schools start classes early. What do you think?  How early is too early for schools to start? Who should make that decision?
