The weekend is here, and for a lot of us, that means we can finally relax after a long work week and enjoy an adult beverage or two. We apparently need to watch HOW much we're drinking here in Iowa, though, because we were named one of the top 10 drunkest states in America.

24/7 Wall St. used data from the CDC to determine the states that have the most adults who drink an excessive amount of alcohol, which includes binge drinking and heavy drinking. According to the article:

"Binge drinking is defined as four or more drinks in a single occasion for women and five or more for men, and heavy drinking is defined as at least eight drinks per week for women and 15 for men."

Overall, around 18% of adults in the U.S. are considered excessive drinkers, but that does differ by state. The top 5 drunkest states in America are:

  1. North Dakota
  2. Wisconsin
  3. Alaska
  4. Montana
  5. Illinois

The majority of the top 10 drunkest states in America are located in the Midwest, which I don't think is a coincidence. Iowa came in at number seven on the list, with 21% of Iowa adults drink excessively. There is some good news, though. The article states, "despite the higher drinking rate in Iowa, only 12.3% of adults report poor health outcomes, the fourth lowest share of any state."  We also have the 7th-lowest ranking for alcohol-related driving deaths. The study reports that the drunkest metro area in Iowa is Iowa City, which makes sense because it's a college town.

You can read more about the study and see the rankings for all 50 states HERE.
