Iowa Grocery Store Continues Toys for Tots Commitment

The local grocery store chain that began 75 years ago in Iowa is once again partnering with the U.S. Marine Corps on their 2017 Toys for Tots campaign.

Fareway Stores' participation in the charity program helps provide toys to less fortunate children during the holiday season. Stores are selling paper trains in $1 and $5 increments, as well as collecting new, unwrapped toys at all 120 Fareway Store locations now through Saturday, December 23.

Last year the store’s campaign raised over $162,000 and collected more than 6,000 toys, making it one of the biggest campaigns in the country, according to Toys for Tots.

The first Fareway Store opened for business at 624 Story Street in Boone, Iowa, on May 12, 1938. Their first advertisement featured coffee at 14 cents a pound, a box of Wheaties cost 10 cents, and T-Bone steaks sold for 25 cents a pound.

Today, Fareway is one of the largest employers in Iowa and the Midwest, providing 10,000 jobs in a five state region.
