If you've spent anytime outside so far this spring, you have probably noticed the tiny, annoying, biting, swarming pests that feast on your every move.  The gnats are back - with a vengeance.  As I mowed our backyard yesterday afternoon I quickly realized these dudes mean business.  I was ten minutes into mowing when I noticed the swarm wasn't leaving my area...and my arms show the results today (see pic.)

So how do you keep from becoming a buffet for gnat nation?  One simple word - vanilla.  Take a squirt bottle and fill it mostly with warm water.  Then take vanilla extract and add some to the water.  It's up to you how much vanilla you can handle - but I would say a teaspoon or two should work.  Then, before you go out to do yard work you can spray yourself.  Or, if you are hosting people on the deck out back - spray generously all around the deck about 10 minutes before your company arrives.  That should do it.  If the gnats are still hanging around, you can add more vanilla to your spray mixture - or offer them a cocktail and a place to sit on the deck.  Good luck!!
