The World’s Largest Garage Sale is tomorrow! Bargain-hunting fun is about to begin. If you're a shopper at this event, polite haggling can be a fun way to come to a price everyone can agree on. If there’s one thing you need to know to get prepped for the big sale this weekend it’s how to haggle. Don’t be afraid. Think of it as simply negotiating. Here are some basic steps to follow if you find yourself in the position to do some bargaining.

  • Pick the Right Time

Arrive at the end of the day before sellers pack up and leave. After a long day of vending they are going to want to head home and probably don’t want to take all of the stuff they didn’t sell back with them. During this time they will be more willing to make some last minute deals or just give you the items.

  • Secretly set a Maximum Price

Having a limit to how much you will spend on an item will prevent you from being convinced to pay more. Never reveal this price to the seller.

  • Make a low but Reasonable Offer

When making your first offer a 25-50% discount is usually a good place start. If a shirt you want is $10, ask for $5. This leaves a little room for you to negotiate.

  • Show Hesitation

Pause before responding to their counter offer. This will make you seem less willing to purchase, therefore you will have more bargaining power. Once you have considered their counter, respond with a new offer between yours and the sellers. So if you offered $5 for the shirt and they countered with $7, show some hesitation before responding with another offer that meets in the middle.

  • Pull out the Cash

If they seem to hesitate show them the cash you're willing to give them and continue negotiating until you agree on a price.

  • Be Willing to Walk Away

If you can’t come to an agreement, then don’t be afraid to walk away from the item. You can even leave your contact information in case the seller changes their mind.

  • Always Keep it Classy

Be friendly. No one wants to work with someone with a bad attitude. Keep it light-hearted and business like. If you can’t come to an agreement just politely part ways. At least you got some haggling practice!
