It seems like a broken record for some in Eastern Iowa. Heavy rain followed by flash flooding and rising river levels. We're seeing it again after another round of heavy precipitation on Monday.

It seems like the area along and north of Highway 20 has been hit the hardest this year. That was again the target yesterday. Some areas reported in excess of six inches of rain the past 24 hours. That has caused severe flash flooding and rivers to flow out of their banks.

The saturated ground causes any rainfall to quickly run off, allowing river levels to rise rapidly. The Maquoketa River in Manchester is expected to crest at 19.5 feet on Tuesday which will result in moderate flooding. It could affect some businesses on West Main Street in Manchester.

Rises along the Wapsipinicon River are also expected. The Wapsi is expected to crest in Independence at 12.7 feet on Tuesday, and at 17.8 feet in Anamosa on Thursday. Minor flooding is expected in both cities.

The problem isn't just the rising waters. It's that there is still rain in the forecast for the coming days. A reminder to NEVER drive through standing water on a roadway. Even a few inches of water moving briskly can sweep a car away.
