‘Frozen 2′ “Hasn’t Even Been Discussed” Says Disney
‘Frozen‘ is a juggernaut. In addition to winning two Academy Awards and becoming the highest-grossing animated film of all time, the movie has seemingly struck a chord with an entire generation. You can’t go out in public these days without hearing an adorable kid belt out a hilariously mangled version of “Let It Go.” It’s already a cultural touchstone. Children are going to be raised on this movie.
And, shockingly, Disney is not talking at all about ‘Frozen 2.’
Disney Chairman Alan Horn recently spoke at the Bloomberg Business of Entertainment Breakfast at the Tribeca Film Festival (via THR), where he addressed the studio’s current (and crowded) slate of upcoming films. In between questions about ‘Pirates of the Caribbean 5‘ (the script is not ready) and ‘Star Wars: Episode 7‘ (casting is almost complete), Horn was asked about the possibility of a ‘Frozen 2.’ His response was refreshing in a film landscape where sequels come out whether the public wants them or not: no one at the company has even started talking about a follow-up.
That may seem crazy coming from a company that has never shied away from running its beloved franchises into the ground with countless direct-to-DVD sequels, but we couldn’t be happier to hear it. ‘Frozen’ is a really good movie that says everything it needs to say and puts a tidy bow on the finished package. ‘Frozen 2′ would just be unnecessary and taint a film that parents and their kids love without reservation. We don’t believe Horn when he says no one has brought up a sequel (someone in accounting surely sent a memo or two), but we do believe that no one is actively pushing for one.
Anyway, Disney is busy bringing ‘Frozen’ to Broadway, where it will join ‘The Lion King’ and ‘Beauty and the Beast’ on the list of massively popular animated films to make the jump to the stage. Disney may not want a ‘Frozen 2,’ but they’re still going to milk the original for everything it’s worth. Kids are going to be singing “Let It Go’ for a long, long time.
