The Cedar Rapids Police Department has provided us with some alarming numbers concerning young people and online pedophiles. Thankfully, they're hosting a free class to help you protect them.

Cedar Rapids Police report that one of every ten young people will be approached by an online pedophile and one in 25 will be solicited aggressively. Thursday night (4/23) from 6 to 9, they're hosting a free program at Kirkwood Community College's Linn County Regional Center in Hiawatha (1770 Boyson Road).

Here's some of what the class will provide:

  1. Insight into making mobile devices safe for families.
  2. Recognizing & fighting dangers on the internet.
  3. The most popular apps that kids are using.
  4. Ways to provide security with social media tools.

The class is free, but you're asked to bring a new or gently-used children's book which will be donated to the Child Protection Center. To register for the class, call Cedar Rapids Police at (319) 286-5439.
