The sale of vitamins and supplements is a multi-million dollar a year business. We all want to lead healthier lives and think that these pills are the answer. And while a daily multivitamin is OK, taking too much of some vitamins can actually be harmful to your health. Here are some to avoid taking too much of.

  • Calcium. A new study found that taking too much can calcify your arteries and lead to heart disease. You're better of eating foods with calcium in them like milk, salmon and broccoli.
  • Vitamin E. They used to say that it lowered your risk of heart disease and cancer, but now fear too much could do the opposite! A multi-vitamin is still OK because they don't have a high enough level of vitamin E to do any damage.
  • Iodine supplements. A lot of food in this country has iodine in it already. Too much can mess with your thyroid. You shouldn't take it unless under doctor's orders.
  • Iron supplements. Too much iron can damage your liver, pancreas and heart. Don't take it unless your doctor tells you that you  have an iron deficiency.
  • Vitamin B-6. Too high a dosage can mess up your nervous system. You can get plenty by just eating fruits, vegetables, chicken and fish.
