While many Iowa workers are dreaming of a four-day work week, it could be a reality for teachers in one eastern Iowa school district. At least when it comes to having to actually teach. The Cardinal Community School District is investigating making the switch for the 2019-20 school year.

Cardinal Community Schools, in Eldon in Wapello County, has been considering the change for six months. Members of the community, staff members, parents, and guardians are all invited to meetings later this month to discuss the change. What, no students? Actually, a student leadership team will be involved. However, I think it's fair to say students won't be opposed to the idea.

According to Ottumwa Radio, the district sent an email to parents about the plus-side of a four-day school week. They include:

  • Keeping current teachers and recruiting and hiring future educators.
  • Boosting morale of teachers and students and possibly lowering absences for both.
  • Would give teachers more time to work with one another and to prepare to help students with their learning.

The school board will have the final call with a vote possible in December or January.

What do you think? Would you support a four-day week in your school district? Please comment 'Yes' or 'No' below and tell us why.
