The new Iowa law says that fireworks are legal to use in the state. But several cities are still not allowing them to be shot off within their city limits. The Dubuque city council voted on Monday night to ban the use of fireworks in the city. The Iowa City Council voted several weeks ago to ban fireworks there as well.

The new state law doesn't allow cities to regulate the sale of fireworks or the possession of them. But it does allow cities to regulate the use of fireworks within city limits. It sets up a confusing situation for consumers. And a potentially expensive one. The fine for setting off fireworks in Dubuque is a $250 fine.

So when you get excited to see fireworks for sale in your community sometime soon, just remember. Check with local law enforcement to see if you can LEGALLY set them off in your area.
