The sound of construction will soon be heard in two different spots in downtown Cedar Rapids as four different storefronts will look different inside, outside, or both.

The Cedar Rapids City Council has approved nearly 50% tax breaks over the next 10 years for properties at 203 and 207 First Ave. SE as well as 110 and 112 Second St. SE. Around three-quarters of a million dollars is expected to be spent inside and outside the buildings.

First-floor restaurants are being planned for the First Ave. addresses which are located in what's been a very busy block recently. The former Coventry Gardens Mall next door has been transformed into loft apartments. A basement bar is also planned for 207 First Ave. SE.

There's no business change planned for the Second St. storefronts, which currently house Red's Public House. However, some beautification will be done to the outside of the building.

The construction is expected to create about 35 jobs and add even more dining choices to downtown Cedar Rapids.
