The headline of a recent story reads as follows. '94% of Parents Bribe their Children.' I hate the word bribe. But, I have 3 children of my own so I know the power of the almighty dollar. But I hate to use the word bribe. What does that teach them? Why not take the approach of rewarding them for good behavior?

Among the most popular things that parents bribe their kids for include doing chores, getting good grades and behaving in public. Really? You have to pay your kids so they will do these things? When I was a kid I did those things because it's what was expected of me! If I didn't do them I got things taken away! If you bribe your kids and put the incentive before the action, what are you teaching them? Reward good behavior. Now I understand that exceptions can be made. Offering something special for a child who is potty training is something many parents do. I'm not sure it really works, but when you're desperate you'll try anything.

What does a bribe say to kids? It says if I throw a fit or act bad Mom or Dad will offer me money to stop. Don't give in and hand over the reward before the good behavior happens. Yes, it can tough, embarrassing and awkward. But someday your kids will thank you for it.
