They're the summertime bane of Iowa plant lovers. The Japanese beetles are back for another season.

They seem to be very partial to Julie's Cannas. They turn the beautiful leaves into something that resembles lace when they're done. The little fella above was devouring one when I got home tonight. He's no longer with us.

I know the answer isn't those fancy bags that you can buy in stores. Those just attract even more of these, uh, characters.

We purchased a very expensive over the counter "repellent" in the past that seemed to do the trick. However, if you've got an inexpensive home remedy that works, I'd love to give it a try. I'm willing to bet many other people in Eastern Iowa would give it a shot as well.

In the meantime, they'd better watch for my fast hand and heavy foot...
