I never hesitate to share my love of the St. Louis Cardinals. They've given me many great memories over the years, but today I'm very concerned because the franchise is being investigated by the FBI.

The F.B.I. and Justice Department are reportedly investigating whether front-office members of the St. Louis Cardinals hacked into an internal network of the Houston Astros. When I heard the news, I was astounded at the allegation. It's being reported that there's evidence the Cardinals got into a database where stats, scouting reports, and even trade possibilities are discussed. How serious is this? Subpoenas have been served to both Major League Baseball and the Cardinals. That makes it pretty serious.

Why the Houston Astros, who now play in the American League? If the allegations are true, it may have something to do with Jeff Luhnow, the Astros GM who used to be with the Cardinals as one of the heads of player development. He was said to be polarizing, despite great success during his time in St. Louis. Is it possible someone or more than one person with the Cardinals was trying to make sure he didn't continue his success in the Lone Star State? If so, it hasn't worked as the Astros have the 2nd best record in baseball (37-28)... to the St. Louis Cardinals (42-21).

The Cardinals released this statement: “The St. Louis Cardinals are aware of the investigation into the security breach of the Houston Astros’ database. The team has fully cooperated with the investigation and will continue to do so. Given that this is an ongoing federal investigation, it is not appropriate for us to comment further.”

I've been a proud Cardinals fan for more than 30 years, but if these allegations are true I'll be an embarrassed one. I'm beginning to understand how New England Patriots fans must feel...
