Can I see your ID?

Believe it or not, there is soon to be an app for that. One state is already starting to work on the concept, and Iowa is reportedly soon to follow.

WTVY reports that Maryland will lead the way with a pilot program starting in the next few months. About 400 transportation employees and their families will spend at least two years using the digital IDs to help test and tweak the program.

How soon will this concept come to Iowa? The Des Moines Register says that plans are in place for our own pilot program, similar to the one in Maryland. It will begin to be tested here over the next year to 18 months among 100 state employees and potentially launched publicly later in 2018, making Iowa among the first ten states to implement this program.

If you're wondering, like I was, about the security of an electronic identification method like this, the Maryland version in particular will reportedly show only minimum identifying details compared to the current hard-copy licenses.

So, hopefully no more fumbling for that license when you're asked for it. Just as you can now do with everything else, all you'll have to do is tap it up on your phone!
