A 25-year-old Cedar Rapids woman recounted details of the attack by her estranged boyfriend in an altercation that resulted in the man's death on Monday night in Cedar Rapids.

In her harrowing story told to the Gazette, stabbing victim Raelynn Finn said she would probably not be alive today had the officers not arrived in time.

Authorities were responding to a domestic disturbance call at the woman's apartment complex when Finn's ex-boyfriend, 25-year-old Markell Bivins, was shot by Cedar Rapids police when he refused to stop his assault on her. She suffered stab wounds and is recovering in the hospital.

The two officers involved in the shooting are on administrative leave pending a formal review of the case.

It would seem that domestic violence calls could possibly be the most violent type of assignments for police to have to respond to. It's frightening to think something like this may happen at any time. I think we are very fortunate to have a well-trained Cedar Rapids police department, one whose officers know how to handle these types of intense situations.
