Cyclones Men’s Basketball Team & Talented Freshman “Mutually Part”

When a player has off the court issues, it's never good. However, when it happens and the coach isn't informed, that's unacceptable. As a result, new Iowa State men's basketball coach Steve Prohm will have one less player for the upcoming season.

Nick Noskowiak is a 6'2" Wisconsin native who has had two different run-ins with law enforcement over the last several months. May 15th he was charged in Wisconsin after refusing an intoxication test after being stopped by police on May 8th. May 20th he was charged with first offense OWI stemming from the May 8th event. Then on August 10th, he was charged with first-degree recklessly endangering safety, a felony. Other charges include criminal damage to property and disorderly conduct.

Somehow, head coach Steve Prohm wasn't made aware of any of it until two days ago, when the team returned from a trip to Spain. He suspended Noskowiak indefinitely at that time. Earlier this morning, Iowa State issued a press release. Coach Prohm's statement read, "Nick informed us Friday night of his decision to step away from basketball and we agree that it is in his best interest and the best interest of Iowa State for us to mutually part. We appreciate his effort when he was with us and wish him and his family the best in the future.”

Noskowiak also had a statement in the release, which read “I have decided to step away from the Iowa State men’s basketball program. I wish Coach Prohm, my former coaches and teammates the best of luck in the future and I appreciate the opportunity they gave me to be a part of their team.”

Noskowiak didn't travel to Spain with the Cyclones due to what was described as "family things that he needs to take care of." He missed 11 games during his senior year in high school last year due to family reasons. He was expected to be the future point guard at Iowa State, a position in great hands with junior Monte Morris.

Noskowiak originally signed with Marquette, but was released from the commitment after they changed coaches. He accepted an offer from Iowa State, then coached by Fred Hoiberg, in April. He'll no doubt have some explaining to do before he finds a new home.
