Washington High School principal Raph Plagman announced his retirement yesterday in an email to parents of students in the district. The 72-year-old Plagman said that he was asked by the district to resign, and told parents he couldn't continue without the support of the district.

District official's decision to ask Plagman to leave followed a monthslong investigation of a sexual relationship between a student and a substitute teacher. The teacher, 24-year-old Mary Beth Haglin, was arrested last month on a charge of sexual exploitation. The Cedar Rapids School District is not commenting on Plagman's email.

Even though the relationship was investigated by officials in February and again in May, authorities were not contacted. The district also failed to keep Haglin from teaching at other schools after she was dismissed from Washington May 17th.

Plagman had been at Washington High for 35 years.
