Since I was unable to leave my couch yesterday, I had to switch up my movie schedule and watch one that was available on Netflix. There were a lot of tears!

It's no secret that I was feeling under the weather yesterday, so I didn't go to the movie rental place like I had planned. Luckily, Netflix had a few good movie selections, so I was still able to watch one for my list. This is one of those movies that I had never heard of before until it hit Netflix. Since then, I have heard nothing but good things about it, but I was also prepared for a very sad ending. As sad as the ending was, though, I think it could've been much worse. I was fully prepared for you-know-who to die, so when they didn't I was super relieved.

A few other thoughts on the movie:

  • WHERE IS LEO'S OSCAR? Seriously, every time I watch a Leonardo DiCaprio movie I am shocked and appalled that he has never won one. He really did a wonderful job with his acting in this flick. He was very convincing!
  • I don't think there's anyone more charming and adorable than a young Johnny Depp. Although I love the roles he's played in newer movies, I think he was great in all his older ones, when he was super young with his scraggly long hair and his great jawline... ok, I'm done swooning over him now.
  • I love that this movie took place in Iowa! Now, I know Endora isn't an actual town, it's fictional, and the movie was actually shot in Texas, but it's the thought that counts! Once they started making references to Des Moines I was like, "HEY! THAT'S HERE!" Kind of a fun little tie-in.
  • I know some people find the movie a little slow and boring, but I didn't feel that way at all. I think it really showed some of that small-town mentality, with the 'everyone knows everyone's business' concept, and it also offered some insight into what it's like to live with someone who is mentally challenged. They did a good job of showing not only the struggles and the challenges, but also the joys and the love. The characters really made you feel something, which is why I enjoyed the slow pace of the movie. It felt like real life.
  • I didn't really like Juliette Lewis in this movie. I can't put my finger on it, but she just didn't fit this role at all, in my personal opinion. I didn't mind her character, it just felt a bit cliche. But I understand why she was necessary to the story.
  • Yes, I cried. I cried a lot.

Overall, good movie. I liked it a lot. If you're ever looking to watch something on Netflix, I'd recommend this one.
