Chris Stapleton has shared another of the tracks from his upcoming album From A Room: Volume 2. Readers can press play above to hear “Scarecrow in the Garden.”

Written by Stapleton, Brice Long and Matt Fleener, “Scarecrow in the Garden” tells the story of a farming family. It’s sung from the point of view of the youngest of three children, who now owns the land after inheriting it from his parents, who moved from Ireland.

As the song — country storytelling at its finest — progresses, listeners learn that the farm was once very profitable, but it isn’t so much anymore: “The fields ain’t once they once were / The rains just seem to flood …” Throughout the song, in each chorus, the narrator mentions that he’s been sitting in the garden, “reading Revelations / With my bare feet in the dirt” — and, at the very end, the plot turns dark and ends on a bit of a cliffhanger.

“Scarecrow in the Garden” is the third track on From A Room: Volume 2, Stapleton’s second record of 2017. From A Room: Volume 1 dropped on May 5, and Volume 2 is set for release on Dec. 1. The project features nine tracks, seven of which were co-written by Stapleton; the two non-Stapleton-penned songs are “Millionaire” and “Friendship,” the latter of which was originally sung by Pops Staples and written by Homer Banks and Lester Snell.
