UPDATE: CBS2 reports that police confirm that the "accident involving the school bus and a 15-year-old student happened because the bus driver ran a red light. The report also states that "the driver has been identified as 53-year-old Darla Rose Ogden of Cedar Rapids. She was cited for failure to obey a Traffic Control Device."

An accident on Mt. Vernon Road Thursday morning injured a Cedar Rapids teen. A co-worker came upon the accident just after it happened near the intersection of 26th St. in southeast Cedar Rapids. The 911 calls came in at approximately 7:38 Thursday morning.

According to KCRG, 15-year-old Cameron Smeby was hit by a Cedar Rapids Community School District bus. The Gazette says a portion of the windshield of the bus was broken. There were students on the bus at the time of the accident, but none of them were injured.

Our co-worker who called in from the scene said the injured teen was in the inside lane of eastbound (outbound) Mount Vernon Road S.E. Emergency personnel had the teen en route to the hospital within 10 minutes of the accident. He was taken by ambulance to Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids before being transferred to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City. Smeby, a Cedar Rapids Washington student, was conscious when he was taken to Iowa City. He reportedly has serious injuries.
