Iowa Governor Terry Branstad is one step closer to officially being named the U.S. Ambassador to China. Branstad gained the approval of a Senate committee today. The move all but guarantees his approval by the full Senate.

Branstad would enter the job at a key time for the Trump administration. Trade issues with the two countries still exist, and the U.S. is pushing hard for China to lead any negotiations with North Korea. Branstad has pledged to work with the Chinese on human rights issues and trade.

Branstad, who is now 70, is the longest-serving governor in the history of the state of Iowa with service of 22 years.
