When we do interviews for our Children's Miracle Network radiothon each year, there is one phrase that each family says at some point -- We never thought it would be us. You never prepare yourself for illness or an accident to happen to your kids. It's the same way with our family. Chase has issues with allergies. He has severe reactions and we haven't been able to pinpoint why. He also had a kidney infection when he was 4, which raised some red flags. This led us once again to the experts at the University of Iowa Children's Hospital in Iowa City.

Having done radiothon for over 15 years, it is a surreal experience to walk the halls of the hospital as the parent of a patient. The elevator we took is in the area where we do radiothon each year. Up in the specialty clinic we saw examples of CMN money being put to use to keep kids occupied and worry free. But the thing that had my wife and I worry free was our doctor. She was amazing. She was caring, inquisitive, and determined to help us find answers. We felt like we were in the hands of one of the best, and clearly we were.

Chase was also amazing. He answered all the questions himself, and as always, did great when it was time to be poked by a needle. I had to leave the room. He smiled and chatted with the nurse as she drew 8 viles of blood for tests. That's the amazing thing about kids, they just do what needs to be done and they're on to the next thing. We're fortunate to have such an amazing hospital right in our back yard. Please realize it for yourself, before you or someone you love becomes a patient. We may not want to go back down for more testing on Chase, but the comfort of knowing that we're in the hands of the best doctors around makes us all feel safe.
