When you ask Iowan's what they know about President Herbert Hoover, some answers are obvious. He was born in West Branch. His father was a blacksmith. Wasn't he President during The Great Depression? Yes, it's true, Hoover was President during the worst economic disaster in our countries history. He is often remembered for that, and not for his many great accomplishments. He was called 'The Great Humanitarian' for his efforts to feed Europe, specifically Belgium, after World War One. He led a similar effort after World War Two. Without his leadership, thousands of people, mostly children, would have died of starvation. As is usually the case, time is the best friend of a former President. History has a way of putting things in perspective. Such is the case with Herbert Hoover.

I visited the museum when I was a young child, most likely in elementary school. So when my son Chase asked if I would chaperone his field trip this week I was interested to see what my adult self would see and think. Along with the kids, I learned about a man filled with discipline, desire and a willingness to help. Despite the troubled timing of his presidency, Herbert Hoover is still a figure that should make Iowans proud. Also, a big thank you to the kids at FMI school in Marion. The kids were well behaved and impressed by all they saw. Here are some photos of our day in West Branch.
