State lawmakers are considering a proposal that would make fantasy sports wagering legal in Iowa.

The Fantasy Sports Trade Association and gaming websites FanDuel and DraftKings are in favor of the Iowa proposal that would place the Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission in charge of monitoring them.

Two states, Nevada and New York, have already put a ban on fantasy sports websites that have daily contesting. Interestingly enough, the Quad-City Times reports the Attorney General of Illinois, Lisa Madigan, believes the types of betting allowed on the sites are illegal. However, there's currently a bill in the Illinois General Assembly that would legalize them.

Virginia is the first state to pass a law that legalizes and regulates fantasy sports sites.

A study being assembled from the University of Northern Iowa's Center for Social and Behavioral Research for the state of Iowa's Department of Public Health reportedly shows 20 percent of Iowans who play fantasy sports are at-risk gamblers. That's a frightening stat.
