Energy companies in Iowa continue to invest in the power of wind. Alliant Energy on Wednesday announced they would spend another $1 billion on wind turbines in the state of Iowa. Iowa governor Terry Branstad along with the CEO of Alliant Energy Patricia Kampling made the announcement yesterday in front of a large wind turbine at Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids.

The money will add around 500 megawatts or 200 turbines, to Iowa's renewable power infrastructure. A majority of the funds will be used to expand a wind farm in Franklin County, Iowa. The deal still needs approval from the Iowa Utilities Board.

Alliant's announcement comes just several months after Mid-American Energy said they would be spending $3.6 billion dollars on 1,000 wind turbines in the state. That project could begin as soon as 2017.

Iowa ranked second in the nation in net electricity generated from the wind. More than 31% of Iowa's electricity came from wind turbines. That is more than any other state in the U.S.
