I've driven many miles on rural Iowa highways and gravel roads, but this weekend I saw something I've never seen before.

Some people plant a row of trees to the north or west of their home to provide a windbreak against the cold of Iowa winters. When I was a growing up, we put straw bales next to the foundation of our rural home. However, the family farm below took it to a whole 'nother level, literally. Just LOOK at all those round hay bales. When I was a kid, I would have loved to have our house inside a fort like that.

Clearly a lot of work, but I have no doubt it's doing the trick. I hope they put them far enough from the house to let light in. Do you have any pictures of creative ways to keep out the cold? I'd love to see 'em.
